For a bona fide tourist to be eligible for a visa, the validity of the passport should cover beyond a period of two months, the period of the applicants intended stay in Sri Lanka. They should also be able to prove that they have sufficient funding available for their stay in Sri Lanka and also possess a valid return ticket.

The following nationalities who arrive to Sri Lanka as bona fide tourist will be granted a 30 day valid visa by the Sri Lanka Department of immigration and emigration at the port of entry.

Albania, Armenia, Australia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belarus, Belgium, Bhutan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Brunai, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech, Republic, Denmark, Doha Qatar, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Iran, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgystan, Kuwait, Latvia, Lithunia, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Maldive, Malaysia, Moldova, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nepal, Norway, Oman, Pakistan, Phillipines, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, Serbia-Montenegro, Seychelles, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkey, Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, Ukraine, United States of America, Uzbekistan, Vietnam

If a further extension is required, the passport holder has to obtain the extension from the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo prior to the expiration of the visa that was issues on the first entry. A maximum 2 month extension will be granted.

The following documents must be handed over when applying for extensions

Visit visa application Copy of the Bio data page of the passport
Two (02) photographs
Relevant visa fee

Any extension beyond this will be granted only after careful consideration by the department and at their sole discretion.

All other nationalities not mentioned in the above list of countries should obtain prior visa from the Sri Lanka diplomatic mission in their country. In the event a diplomatic mission is not available arrangements could be made through Sri Lanka Department of immigration and emigration in Colombo to obtain visa.
