Situated 150m above on gigantic sloping rock the temple consists of 5 separate beautiful and richly paited caves. They contain over 150 images of the Buddha and paintings. The origins of the temple dates back to 1st century BC when King Valagambahu had the caves made in to beautiful temples. This is a world heritage site. There is also a enormous Buddha statue at the bottom of the rock. This statue built in 2001 is painted in gold and  claims to be one of the largest in the world.
