The region is believed to be a place where the Buddha visited. So it has a very important historical significance with an ancient dagoba believed to enshrine relics of the Buddha. Close to this area lies Dambana, the lands of the remaining descendents of the ancient aboriginal people. They are know as Wanniyala-etto or Veddahs.
